The Orteig Prize—a $25,000 reward—was offered on May 19, 1919, by New York hotel
owner Raymond Orteig. On offer for five years, it attracted no competitors. In 1924
Orteig renewed his offer for another five years. At that time the state of the needed
technology had advanced to a point that numerous competitors vied for the prize.
